Just knowing you did makes it all worth it.

Horror gripped the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant if he might go out into the “no man’s land” between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.

“You can go,” said the lieutenant, “but i don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” The lieutenant’s advice didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway. Miraculously he managed to reach his friend, hoist him onto his shoulder and bring him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at his friend.

“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded.”

“It was worth it, though, sir,” said the soldier.

“What do you mean; worth it?” responded the Lieutenant. “Your friend is dead.”

“Yes, Sir” the private answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hearing him saying, “Jim…, I knew you’d come.”

Sometimes even when something appears futile and not worth the risk or effort to some people, to others it’s all worthwhile for that little peace of mind and small comfort we give to others.

  4. Is it friendship week or something, as I have come across another blogger who wrote something similar.

Like always, Friendship and doing the right thing for the sake of others is rare in today’s society. What you have highlighted is the ideal relationship one should have with everyone.

    • I’m not sure about it being friendship week but it would be nice if it was, might then encourage a few to show they care.

This post just isn’t about friendship it’s about a lot of things. About letting people know you are there for them no matter what. It’s also about your own peace of mind of knowing you did the right thing. Going to sleep at night knowing you did your best and reached out to someone and they know it too.

This soldier went back for his friend and even though he died, the soldier has the peace of mind knowing his friend knew he was there for him and he never died alone, waiting and scared.

In life I think our self consciousness and in our hearts there is a part of us that needs to know that you did the right thing. There should be no nagging doubts and feelings that you could have done more or haven’t done enough.
